Hydronephrosis

Hydronephrosis – Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

Hydronephrosis is the swelling of one or both kidneys due to a build-up of urine. It happens when urine cannot drain out from the kidney to the bladder due to a blockage or obstruction.

🔍 Causes:
  • Kidney stones: Obstructing the flow of urine
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs): Causing inflammation and blockage
  • Congenital defects: Present at birth, affecting urinary drainage
  • Enlarged prostate: In men, it can compress the urethra
  • Tumors: In or near the urinary tract
📋 Symptoms:
  • Pain in the side and back (flank)
  • Urinary problems (urgency, frequency, or dribbling)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fever, if infection is present
  • Swelling of the abdomen
🩺 Treatment:
  • Treat underlying cause: Like removing kidney stones or draining the bladder
  • Antibiotics: If there is an associated infection
  • Surgery: To correct structural abnormalities or remove obstructions
  • Catheterization: Temporary relief of blocked urine flow

Early detection and treatment are essential to prevent permanent kidney damage. Consult a urologist if you experience persistent urinary symptoms or flank pain.
